illy began recovering nicely from his bat wounds and was allowed to go home three days after he’d been declared dead. His girlfriend, Sara, was among the first to welcome him home.

“I thought I’d lost you forever,” she said tearfully as she held on to his bandaged hand. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without my Billy.”

What Billy didn’t know was that Chigger was standing just outside his room. He heard every word. Billy’s mother had met him at the front door and told him he could visit briefly with Billy when Sara left. She was about to leave Chigger at Billy’s bedroom door but noticed something odd about the boy.

“You don’t look good, young man,” she said.

She grabbed his chin and held his face up toward the light. He had dark circles under his eyes. His skin was pale, especially for a full-blood Cherokee.

“I’m just a little tired,” Chigger replied. “I’ve been feeling this way since the day Billy got hurt. I’m sure I’ll get over it.”

She left him and returned to the kitchen. There she picked up a tray of food and a local newspaper. In a few moments she came back and said, “I’ll have Sara out of there in no time.”

She moved past Chigger, opened Billy’s door, and entered.

“Here’s your lunch,” she said. “I want you to eat all of it too.” Then she turned her attention to Sara. “Sara, honey, I don’t want Billy to get too tired seeing a lot of visitors today. Would you mind coming back tomorrow? You could have another short visit then.”

“All right, Mrs. Buckhorn,” the girl said. “I need to go home and get on the Internet. I have to update all my online friends about Billy’s recovery. You wouldn’t believe how many new friends are following me since Billy’s hospital miracle!”

Billy, who had never been a fan of publicity or social media, cringed. It bothered him more and more that his girlfriend seemed to be so hooked on it, but he didn’t say anything this time. And Billy’s mother really wasn’t a fan of Sara’s either. But she also didn’t say anything.

To Billy, Sara said softly, “I’ll see you tomorrow, my sweet.”

Before leaving, she kissed the tip of her own finger and held it up to the lightning scar on the side of Billy’s neck, the same thing she’d done back when she first thanked him for saving her life.

Sara was very surprised to find Chigger waiting in the hall, especially since Mrs. Buckhorn had just said she didn’t want Billy to have a lot of visitors. It was then that Sara realized that Billy’s mother might not be on her side in her battle for Billy’s attention.

Sara had originally thought Chigger might be a little bit of a threat to her. Now she was sure of it. But she was also sure Billy would choose her over this scraggly boy.

Sara moved past Chigger without speaking.

“Hello, Sara,” Chigger said sweetly with a smile. He knew that he was the winner of this round in the contest.
